Ashleigh is a four bedroom timber and straw house. Built by Jim Carfrae in 2005, the house won the Federation of Master Builders 'Eco house of the year' in 2007 for the contractor, Rob Gulley.
The house is warmed by two wood stoves and a small gas boiler. The heat energy required is 29 Kwh/m2/yr., which is better than the current requirement under the Code for Sustainable Homes level 6
The exposed Douglas Fir frame combined with the old bricks and soft lime washed walls, give a wonderful natural feel to the interior. The hygroscopic walls combined with a passive ventilation system, provide a healthy indoor atmosphere.
